The Rootless and the Restless.

The madrassa students were the "rootless and restless, the jobless and the economically deprived with little self knowledge," Rashid concludes. "They admired war because it was the only occupation they could possibly adapt to. Their simple belief in a messianic, puritan Islam which had been drummed into them by simple village mullahs was the only prop they could hold on to and which gave their life some meaning." Mortenson 244
I chose this quote because to me it shows the difference between an education and an indoctranation. The students of the madrassa's are not being taught, instead they are being programmed. The fact that they are poor and without education makes them vulnerable.
"This was an isolated and cut off area," he said, gripping the microphone with pop star swagger . "We were lonely here in Zuudkhan. But Dr. Greg and Mr. George wanted to improve our village. For the benefit of the poor and needy of this world like this Zuudkhan people, we tell our benefactors thank you. We are very, very grateful." Mortenson 250
This quote says it all, it clearly shows the value in education. Not only does education help the needy and the poor but it also opens up isolated or cut off areas.
" I request Americans to look into our hearts," Abbas continued, his voice straining with emotion, " and see that the great majority of us are not terrorists, but good and simple people. Our land is stricken with poverty because we are without education. But today another candle of knowledge has been lit. In the name of Allah the Allmighty, may it light our way out of the darkness we find ourselves in." Mortenson 257
I chose this quote because it is like the two quotes above, it is yet another example of the impact education has on defeating poverty which is the breeding ground for terrorism.
